How to ruin a date with an archivist in five words - Storify
"The hashtag #FiveWordsToRuinADate is taking the Twitterverse by storm. It topped the trending list in both the United States and the United Kingdom. This new hashtag game has something for everyone -- from big corporations to regular folks."
Twitter archivists also uses the hashtag #RuinADateWithAnArchivistInFiveWords since last week to highlight most of the annoying things that are being said to them. We have heard most of them, but some are still a surprise!

Time again for Follow a Library Day tomorrow on 1 Oct #followalibrary
Tmrrw is #followalibrary Day! We’ll tweet about innovative, out-of-the-box #library programs, resources, & work practices. #librarysurprises
— Followalibrary (@followalibrary) September 30, 2014
The yearly Follow-a-library campaign with the hashtag #followalibrary is on again for tomorrow.
The campaign was reignited by the International Librarians Network which posted about Library Advocacy & Lobbying: #FollowaLibrary Day (International)
David Green (@dpgreen), Children's and Youth Librarian from Australia, posted a guest post about the Twitter campaign on ILN: Libraries and Social Media: Follow a Library Day
"Join Us for #followalibrary Day on October 1st!
Are you passionate about promoting your library? Do you need to escape the echo chamber and reach people from other industries, and non-users? Does your library do or have something that may surprise people? Make sure you get behind #followalibrary Day! At a minimum, you and your library service will get more followers.
This online event runs all day on October 1st.
It’s a marketing, advocacy, networking free-for-all; a drop-in, casual twitter chat that feels like a group hug. Everyone everywhere can participate, and with steering committee members from South Africa, the Netherlands, and Australia, it’s truly an international affair.
How to play:
• Add #followalibrary to your tweets
• Follow @followalibrary for discussion topics and questions
• Watch the stream by searching #followalibrary
This year we’ll tweet topics and questions from the @followalibrary account with a #librarysurprises focus.
The idea is to spread the word about innovative, out-of-the-box library programs, resources, and work practices, that users and non-users may be surprised to learn we do."

#WW1archives @followanarchive @askanarchivist |
German archivist Thomas Wolf from SIWI-archives suggested that the focus should be on World War I or The Great War that started 100 years ago.
The Great War in archives
All archives and other heritage organizations are asked to search their collections for documents related to the First World War 1914-1918. Even countries that were neutral during the Great War, can perhaps find some records about, for instance, aid to refugees, or military or financial support to soldiers, families, countries in need.
Subjects to look for and tweet about
Archival documents, records, newspapers, pictures, drawings, postcards, paintings, etc. about:
- Soldiers
- Families and loved ones of soldiers
- Battlefields
- Refugees
- Aid / Support
- Governments
- Weapons
- Mobilisation
- Diseases
- War cemeteries
- History before, during, after 1914-1918, all related to the First World War
Hashtag: #WW1archives

Save archives on International Archives Day 2013 - 9 June #savearchives
Archives are struggling for survival; to keep on demonstrating their worth in today's tight economy.
Not all archives are surviving and thriving, and they need support to keep on preserving the world's heritage records.
International Archives Day is coming up on 9 June with an initiative to promote a Googledoodle for that day.
The Askarchivists and Followanarchive initiatives are spearheading the Googledoodle campaign, but are also concentrating on focusing on archives that need saving.
The City Archives of Cologne in Germany is being used as an example of archives that are in dire need of support after the building collapsed in March 2009.
Read more:
International Archives Day will be dedicated to archives in need
They are asking that we promote archives on 9 June with the hashtag #savearchives
Hopefully our attention and support can help #savearchives!

Heritage Beasts in the Archives #heritagebeasts
#heritagebeasts in SABC Radio Archives |
The Twitter hashtag is #heritagebeasts
They call it Beasts in your collections?!
The call:
"Let’s dive into our collections to search for colourful fishes. Let’s make a safari tour through our depots to catch wild animals. Let’s have a stroll through all the bookshelves to discover beautiful insects that hide there. Let’s have a great flight through our storagerooms and catch up with some amazing birds. Make a silent tour at night to spot the very rare unicorn. And let’s show all the animals we found in our depots and collections to the world on World Animal Day!"
The SABC Radio Archives, the audio archives for the radio stations of the national broadcaster of South Africa (SABC), are no exception!
We have our fair share of sounds and programmes about beasts!
A search for "animals" in our Thesaurus results in 147 documents.
In one document of 1980 the sounds of the following are recorded: dove, elephant, hippo, zebra, jackal, frog, lion, heron, rhino, impala, ... (See the snippet that was copied on top.)
A search for "Rhino*" (Rhino/rhinoceros) yields 35 documents.
The wonderful beast that is being slaughtered on a daily basis for its horn!
Most of the programmes are about the conservation of this animal, but we have the sounds of this mighty beast preserved for our heritage in our collection!
It was interesting to look at our collections from this angle!
Have a happy "hunting" in your collections for those beasts!
Thank you Ask Archivists for the initiative!

#Followalibrary with #myfavoritebook - Report from a lone tweep from Africa
October 1 was the yearly Follow a Library #followalibrary day on Twitter.
This year fell on a Saturday.
I enquired about the day this year on Twitter, and got the following response:
I got included in the crew of #followalibrary day by Wilma van den Brink (@wbk500) from the Netherlands. That is what happens when you stick your neck out on social media...
You get immediate response and involvement!
![]() |
#Followalibrary website |
SABC Media Libraries: @SABCMediaLib
SABC Radio Archives: @SABCRadioArc
The topic of discussion was #myfavoritebook.
Very valuable suggestions came to the fore with regards new books to explore.
See the Twubs curation tool on top for all the #myfavoritebook suggestions that is still coming through on Twitter.
I found no other libraries from South Africa or Africa participating on Saturday on Twitter.
It is possible that I could have missed them. Please give me an shout-out when you know of any libraries.
Africa is also not included in the list of #followalibrary blog: Find a library to follow.
(Wilma, will you please add us?)
The deduction can be made that libraries and librarians in Africa have still not caught on to social media.
It is something that needs urgent attention, especially since libraries worldwide are going through the same struggles with regards budgets, closures, manpower shortages, the impact of the eBook, Internet and digitization (to name a few).
Is it not time that libraries in Africa step up and connect with their peers on social platforms?
We need the connection and the wisdom from our global colleagues, but we also need the connection with our customers.
What do our customers need to still make us as libraries a valuable resource in Africa?
