SABC Media Libraries supports Woodside Sanctuary in their Christmas appeal

Loné Botha with one of the eldest residents, Heidi

The SABC Media Libraries have been involved with Woodside Sanctuary for a number of years.
See the stories on our blog: Woodside

The SABC Media Libraries responded to their  Christmas appeal for 2014  by digging into their own pockets for a small donation. The thought was: Better late than never!

The SABC Media Libraries appeal to anyone to also consider Woodside Sanctuary when wanting to spread a little bit of the Christmas spirit!

Season’s Greetings, Friends!
We’ve all heard that it is better to give than to receive. To know that you are helping to make someone’s life just a little bit easier or helping to make someone happy is an indescribable feeling.

So as we close out 2014 we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all our supporters who kindly contributed their time and support to the running of our specialised facility.

So while you are busy buying and making gifts for your loved ones this Festive Season, please remember there are so many people in need. While most of us take for granted having a merry Christmas, some among us can only pray and dream about it.

Christmas is a special time for our residents and we would like to appeal to you again to help us end the year on a high note by ensuring that those in our care have a very happy Festive Season. We would like to arrange that each child receives a small gift on Christmas day and that we have a special Christmas Lunch that they can all enjoy.

Our ability to help depends upon your kindness, so this Christmas as you contemplate your gift list, won’t you please consider including Woodside Sanctuary

SABC Media Libraries hand over gift voucher to Woodside Sanctuary, made possible by Jungle One Hour Projects

 The SABC Media Libraries have been involved with Woodside Sanctuary since the SABC Media Libraries' 67 minutes at Woodside in 2011.
Woodside Sanctuary has been part of the SABC Media Libraries' CSI projects.

They are doing such a wonderful job looking after people with severe to profound mental and physical disabilities. The link is here: Woodside

Jungle Oats has a campaign running called the Jungle One Hour Projects. A gift voucher that was lost in a Jungle One Hour win, resurfaced again.
(In the meantime Jungle One Hour projects replaced the lost gift voucher.)

Jungle One Hour Projects agreed that this voucher could be used towards another Jungle One Hour Project, namely Woodside Sanctuary.

We are extremely grateful that the CSI Committee of the SABC Media Libraries could hand it over today!

Thank you, Jungle One Hour Projects!

Keep Platfontein clean - update and thanks

"Keep Platfontein clean" - photo collage from an internal SABC  update

This is an update of the SABC Platfontein involvement with "Keep Platfontein clean" as well as a feeding scheme.
The campaign was officially launched on 20 April 2012, and it was a day of great celebration about the success and future hope for the programme.

"KEEP PLATFONTEIN CLEAN" INITIATIVE PROGRAMME: SABC, ISIBINDI, SASI, KEEP KIMBERLEY CLEAN, BUILDERS MARKET, PLASCON, NUMAIN AND WILDEKLAWER

INTRODUCTION

We have all witnessed the first launch of the keep Platfontein clean campaign, a programme that will continue from today by us, businesses and other stakeholders.
An iniative out of one person’s inspiration...

BACKGROUND OF THE DAY

We planned to launch the keep Platfontein clean campaign in 2009 and Keep Kimberley clean donated us with 10 gabage bins but the campaign was on hold until further notice.

The inspiration comes out of a day’s observation when I decided to go and see the school surroundings, because pupils were complaining about drinking water at the school. When I was at the school ground, I decided firstly to go into the toilets while many of the children were busy using it.

You won’t believe me but that day was a shock to me. I hardly could breath when I saw how dirty these toilets were. It was from here that I said to myself, that there is something that I can do to change this situation for these children.  Even if it took me to go around and to ask for donations.

I spoke to some people to help conquer this situation. Thanks to all of you who believed in me before I could even explain to you what my plan was.
With this I would like to thank the ISIBINDI team who could come out freely to take the initiative in cleaning the dirty toilets with me. Thanks guys!

A special thank you to all the following people mentioned:

!XUNKHWESA COMBINED SCHOOL

The principal of the school who accepted my ideas in the first place when I approached him.
Sir, your faith in believing that I can make a difference is mostly appreciated.  Mr.Jomo Jonkers was my teacher and principal back in Schmidtsdrift. The one very important thing he did in my life, was when he was there for me in time when I needed most help by paying my registration fees for my further studies. I remember sitting under the tree hopeless of wanting to go for further studies when Mr Jomo Jonkers stopped and asked me whether I will go to JHB. It’s because of his good deeds that I have become whom I am today ,Sir! All the credit goes back to you.

PLASCON

I like to thank the Corporate Social Investment & PR Manager of Plascon, Mr.Patrick Seager for understanding in a very short notice in sponsoring our project. Sir, the paint you donated did its function and we are very thankful for your contribution and hope we will extend this relationship in the future as well.

BUILDERS MARKET KIMBERLEY

Johan – the manager of Builders Market, thank you very much for believing in me and sponsoring the paints. Your contribution to the project is not unnoticed and we appreciate it and are hoping to extend this relationship in the future as well.

NUMAIN WHOLESALES

Mr Daya – for your contribution with the swiping stuffs. You made it easier for the school; they have some tools to clean the school with now. We thank you for the efford you made to make it available. We know the pressure you were working in, but you still did not forget us.

WILDEKLAWER

I thank Danielle du Toit for providing us with the following: pumpkins, butternuts and watermelons. Thank you very much for your help, we appreciate your help and I hope we will extend our relationship in the future as well.

KEEP KIMBERLEY CLEAN - MOTHER OF KEEP PLATFONTEIN CLEAN.

I would like to thank Wendy Peine who has done a very good job by providing us moral support and the followings;
a) Paints of different colours we used to paint the gabage bins we used for the competition.
b) Garbage plastic bags
c) Gloves
d) Garbage bins

Wendy, thank you very much and I mean it from my heart for you believing in me to take part in this initiative. The school appreciate all that you have done and I believe that this won’t be the first time. We will work closely even in the future as well.

KIMBERLEY MUNICIPALITY

I thank the municipality for adding 1 additional tap at the school, your contribution in this regard is highly appreciated and I believe we will work closely in the future.

RED CROSS

Thank you very much for contributing toilet paper to the school. We appreciate all that you have done, lets continue holding hands even in the future as well.

SASI

I would to thank the following people by their names for their contributions to this project;

a) Meryl Joy – for giving me advice and motivating me not to give up. You were not like a director of  South African San Institute ,the ways you accommodated yourself with us, you were in meetings with us all the time, giving fruitful advices and opened something we ever needed, especially working hard towards the needs of Platfontein ‘s young artists. I appreciate it.
b) Uncle Joe for taking his own initiative in arranging trees for us to plant at the school and delivering it personally to us. Thanks uncle for your hard work, we all appreciate all that you have done.
c) Billies Pamo for arranging some of the things even though he was busy with his exams, thank you very much.
c) Hennie Swart, we need more people like you, people who will listen to you with understanding and take what you have said in the next level without judging you. I know you left your important meetings to be with us in the meeting, and that only showed us how much you valued us and not only the project but the community of Platfontein have a very special place in your heart.

And for those who don’t know him, he’s  Mr.Hennie Swart who recently sponsored 16 desperate children aged 8 – 16 from Platfontein each with a movie tickets to have a sit inside the cinema and watch. Making the children’s day a very special day! They were the first group to be at the cinema.
d) Mario Mahongo (junior): You know we appreciate your contribution to the project and also to the modern music project. You will face many challenges working with the youth, I wish you all the best.

SABC
To my colleagues’ a whole hearted thanks for you standing behind me, especially;

a) William Heath - for moral support, making sure that I get all that I need, including the facilities , supervising and mentoring me in the process. I  thank you, Sir. I am what I am today because of you.
.
b) Grant - for fixing the taps at the school, you don’t know how much appreciation the kids have for you. They have access to clean drinking water now.

c) Gloria - for believing and standing behind me, and also for allowing Grant to travel to Platfontein to fix the taps. I noticed your contribution to the project and all that you have done.

d) Sebolelo - for making sure that there’s news coverage (X-K fm current affair team). I have learned one thing from you and that is the importance of news.

e) X-K fm current affairs team. Thank you very much guys for contributing toilet papers out of your own pockets for this project. I know it was short notice but for you it was never too late. Lets keep this good relationship guys even in the future as well.

f) TV licence (Jacques Coetzee and Thelma): for making sure that the green water bottles and RSG sun hats to be delivered out of your costs of R1000. You are amazing and the fact that you believed in me personally, thanks a lot. I believe that our relationship will be extended even to the future as well.

g) X-K fm (Regina and Malton): for availing workforce and using stations budget to make sure that snacks and drinks be provided to the kids. Making competition prizes available and making time to be at the scène, all effort recognised.

h) Louwtjie du Preez - for using his precious time and money to collect paints from Plascon in Bloemfontein depot - the paints we used for painting the toilets.

i) Patricia Glade -  for providing all the sanitary products on a short notice, Patricia the girls of our school appreciate your helping hand and I personally believes that we will continue our relationship, that you are not going to drop me when I need you.

j) Karen du Toit – thank you very much for the updated stories about the project on the RBF website/Media library blog.

k) Keneiloe Mothobi – for believing in me and also for the article on the intercom.

MPOWERCUP

Glenda Tutt - and lastly I would like to thank Glenda Tutt, for believing in me and for helping me with donations.
Sustainable sanitary products are needed and Mpower cups are the solution to this problem. By supplying these Mcups to the school girls, Platfontein will avoid the environmental/waste disposal problem of 240 000 pads over 5 years of usage and will prevent toilets drains been blocked.

I appeal to any body with helping heart to help donate at least one girl with this .

"You have given a girl the equivalent of 1 200 pads, saved the environment/waste collection and bought R2 280 worth of traditional sanitary ware. A good deal all round I would say!  Any donation amount is welcome-  R39 from 5 donors will buy 1 Mcup. R39 from 1 000 donors will secure 200 Mcups."

SABC Platfontein involved with "Keep Platfontein clean" as well as a feeding scheme

Report by Moshe Maghundu
Librarian/Archivist at SABC Platfontein.

SABC Platfontein is currently busy with a CSI initiative “Keep Platfontein clean project” as well as "Feeding the school children".
The date for the Lounge event for these projects was postponed to a further date in early April this year.

SABC Platfontein has not stop asking for sponsorship for this event.

Wildeklawer farm made a generous sponsorship of some of their products.
Arrival at Wildeklawer farm

Yesterday SABC Platfontein went to Wildeklawer farm after Rena Maghundu (RBF Platfontein) made a request to them.
They were very kind to offer them the following: butternuts, onions, watermelons and others.
Left: Simon-X-K FM producer; middle:Moshe-librarian/archivist;
 right: Tommy-X-K FM intern

"Butternuts, butternuts... very busy loading the vehicle.
Time 14:35, first trip.

They have asked Wildeklawer to extend their relationship with them as this project will be ongoing.

The products were so many that they had to make two trips.
"On the road to Wildeklawer, 30km from Platfontein"

A special thank you is extended to William Heath, SABC RBF,  for assisting them with the transport, and logistics as well.
"Busy loading the fruits.
Time15:35, second trip"

Their plan with these products is to feed the school children and the attendants at the Lounge event.
They were helped by some of the school kids, very excited!

The event is an initiative between RBF Platfontein, Kimberley X-K FM, Keep Kimberley Clean, Logistics and others.

They will soon communicate the date for the Lounge...

SABC Media Libraries' 67 minutes at Woodside

The SABC Media Libraries identified a new CSI project for us to contribute towards. We visited the Woodside Sanctuary on Mandela Day as part of the 67 minutes giving back to our community. We had to help out with some of the stimulation activities. We are very grateful to them for giving us this opportunity!

I got the distinct impression that it was more effort on their behalf to ensure that we were accommodated, and that we met some of the residents. In spite of the effort, they greeted us with open arms and smiles! It seems they are hungry for visits, and the children loved the attention!

Woodside Sanctuary caters to the following needs:
"Primarily dedicated to meeting the needs of people with severe to profound mental and physical disabilities, Woodside provides a high standard of holistic care within a stimulating and homely environment. Originally founded in 1955, the home has been extended over the years to provide accommodation for up to 120 permanent residents. Most of the residents are sleeping in wards, a few are accommodated in single bedrooms and one section is functioning as a home-unit where they share double rooms. Several areas exit within the home where residents attend different stimulation programmes. All clients who are referred to the home are assessed prior to being admitted as a resident. A gradual introduction period to the home is normally recommended asa trial period so the home can assure itself, the residents and the family that the placement is
appropriate." -
Woodside Sanctuary

It was an eye-opener to most of us.

I asked for some feedback from the people visiting:
Maryna:

The visit at Woodside Sanctuary was a very emotional visit.
The children were so happy and laughing within their circumstances.
I think Woodside Sanctuary’s personnel are doing a great job with passion.

Cate (Team Leader: CSI Team):

We had remarkable experiences and had good lessons to learn. We were united in spirit! Let us work together and make those children’s world as comfortable as possible.

Florence:

It was a very emotional experience because she has a small child and she thought about how it would have affected her if it was one of her own children there. It was very difficult to have seen them!

Markus:
Markus had a previous experience at Woodside because he had the flu on Monday and did not want to risk infecting one of the children. He realized that when God blesses you with normal children, you don’t realize there are more needy children. We need to look beyond ourselves! He is also involved with other orphanages, but he has never seen anything like what we saw at Woodside. It is neediness to the highest degree! They deal with delicate children who need expert care!

Elizabeth:

She met Henry for a second time on Monday. She is part of the CSI Team. Henry is blind, but he knits very well. It was very emotional. They were talking to him, but he did not respond. But when we were leaving, he started to kiss her hands, and held her, not wanting her to leave…

Retha:

David grabbed my heart... previously an engineering student, for whom it is an achievement now to distinguish left from right.  They say he sometimes remembers his clever days, and it frustrates him a lot. The day got me thinking... yes, my situation is not hot chocolate and marshmallows at all, but put in perspective of the bigger picture, I have such a lot to be thankful for.  - The merry ways of Retha Buys

We had such an eye-opening experience.
We realized we have so much to be thankful for!

The SABC Media Libraries are going to try and contribute towards smaller items, such as toiletries and slippers, and we are taking their plight to sponsors as well. It is a large operation to keep running smoothly for the sake of the children.

Media Libraries CSI project

The SABC Media Libraries have embarked on a Corporate Social Investment Project since 2007. The Manger Care Centre in Benoni, specifically with Blessings and Las Vegas Creche, are the main receivers of the investment. Blessings houses unemployed men. The Las Vegas Creche is situated in Etwatwa and is run by a lady called Elizabeth who looks after 50 – 60 children aged 1 – 6.

The following has already been donated:
  • Stainless steel sinks, a medical aid kit and blankets were donated;
  • Fruit trees were planted;
  • Stationary and a cot were donated;
  • Christmas Parties were held for the kids;
  • Seed and seedlings were donated, as well as bedding and curtains;
  • Most recently a 200 set linen donation were received from the FIFA Organizing Committee of UJ.

The Media Library is very proud of this project, since most donations and funding come from the staff of the Media Library. Fund raising activities such as the selling of hot dogs are done twice a year. External donations came from The University of Johannesburg, Clover Danone, Starke Ayres.

On Mandela Day on 16th July the Media Libraries will visit Blessings to deliver clothing, books and other stuff. See the SABC Media Libraries website for more info and photos.
