SABC Information Library will be highlighting South African Library Week next week.


"The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) is celebrating South African 
Library Week from 11-21 March 2016 with the theme 

“#libraries4lifelonglearning”

The National Launch will be held at the Sibusisiwe Hall 1 Thokoza Road, Sundumbili, KwazuluNatal near to the Sundumbili Library on Friday 11 March 2016. Deputy Minister of Arts and 
Culture, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi will deliver the Keynote Address. 

The theme “#libraries4lifelonglearning” frames the substantial contribution of libraries to the 
efforts that strive to address our country’s educational, social, cultural and recreational needs
and prevalent inequalities. It provides insight into the role of libraries in South Africa and 
demonstrates how this slots into the objective of ensuring equitable access to quality 
information and to social advancement opportunities. This makes libraries complicit in the 
intention to realize the vision of an informed nation. 

South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP) 2030 proposes to eradicate poverty and 
inequality by 2030 using a robust economy driven by skilled workers. However, the 
competencies needed for entry to the job market need to be developed especially among the 
youth. Innovation - shaping products and services from knowledge acquired through learning -
contributes to the growth of the economy and social improvement as envisaged in the NDP 
2030. Also, the current global mindset calls for digital literacy as a learned skill that enables 
people to access, evaluate and apply information within the digital environment. These 
proficiencies, accompanied by a sense of responsibility for and awareness of the impact of 
technology on the world are seen as norms of behavior encompassed by the term ‘digital 
citizenship’ and aspired to in the NDP 2030. 

Lifelong learning is a purposeful learning activity undertaken on an ongoing basis with the aim 
of improving knowledge, skills and competencies that includes developing the ability to 
search for information and actively and independently create knowledge. It embraces various 
forms of education and training: formal, non-formal and informal; the traditional school 
system from primary to tertiary level; adult education, informal training and so on. It is 
undertaken individually, in a group setting or within the framework of social movements. 

Libraries share in the responsibility for evolving further a knowledgeable, technological adept 
and prosperous society by harnessing its resources and redirecting these towards client and 
community services while providing physical and virtual spaces for lifelong learning.

Therefore libraries:

• provide learning resources in various formats
• advance literacy through intellectual and creative support
• provide access to global knowledge and information to advance research and create new knowledge
• foster a spirit of enquiry and curiosity
• create a desire for lifelong learning
• instil respect for diverse beliefs, opinions and views
• contribute towards the development of South African’s as an informed nation
• develop a digitally literate nation 
• empower people for prosperity

Our country remains characterized by divisions two decades after liberation. Lifelong learning 
provides opportunities to dissolve boundaries that may be in place among traditional sectors: 
education, the labour market and industry; or, other facets of society whether these are 
regional/geographic, socio-cultural or political. Through library services, people have insights 
to the ways of others which is hoped will lead to improved understanding and tolerance.

SABC to celebrate South African Library Week by focusing on the services of the SABC Information Library

South African Library Week (SALW) will also be celebrated at the SABC this year, with a specific Library Day planned on Monday 16th March.

The following is copied from an article on the SABC Intranet by Keketso Magwai of Corporate Communications about the importance of the day, as well as the services that are rendered by the SABC Information Library.

"The SABC joins the rest of the country in celebrating one of the most fundamental information hubs, the library. The celebration of the South African Library Week (SALW) this year begins from the 14th to the 21st of March 2015. The week is meant to create awareness and appreciation for the role that the library plays in connecting, informing and educating the society. SALW was initiated by the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) in 1997 as a campaign with the first library week taking place in 2002.

The SABC Library Manager, Ms. Monica Van Deventer states that “First Citizens must be aware that the library has a vast collection of books, magazines, newspaper clippings, magazines and online resources. First Citizens are always welcome to visit the library, not only for academic purposes, but also for work related purposes and personal development. We urge all First Citizens to make use of the Information Library”. She further highlights that the employees can also access the catalogue from the Intranet, in order to get to the catalogue, click on more links on the Intranet and scroll down where the library link will be found and First Citizens will be able to search for resources from their work stations."

The Library Week campaign already kicked off this week with an internal "Did you Know?" mailers going out on the corporate communications informing personnel about the upcoming South African Library Week as well as focusing on the SABC Information Library.

The plans for SALW Day at the SABC includes a musical welcome on Monday to personnel arriving at work. Harp player, Ventura, as well as Suzette Lombard (Music Library Manager) will be playing music from 7:00 am to 8:30 am. The SABC Media Libraries personnel will also hand out leaflets to the personnel at the entrances, and directing them to the Information Library personnel in the foyer as well as in the Library. The plan is to acquaint personnel with navigating the Intranet to the SABC Information Library's information products that are made available to them. There are also three surprise parcels (including books, music CDs, stationary and note pads) to be won by personnel.

During the most recent South African Library Week 2014, the SABC Information Library had an internal awareness campaign running in the SABC about the services that they provide to their corporate clients.

"The information library started using a manual way of cataloguing 

which ended in 1979 and it was called a card system."

"During 1988 the library was computerized and started ordering and 

circulating periodicals on behalf of all SABC staff."

"Dr. Burgers together with Ms Rhoda made a small collection of fiction books 

and organized them to assist radio announcers. 

The collection grew to 10,000 in 1979"

Some more facts about the SABC Information Library:

Did you know? 

• The information library was established in 1961 and it is situated at Radio Park K2 A1-19.

• The vision of the library is to be the leading provider for the public broadcaster and it’s stakeholders ad it’s mission is to acquire and make available, at all times, information required by the library’s users-both internal and external and again to provide relevant information upon request.

• The information library has three sections that comprises of book section, magazine and newspaper section.

• That the SABC has a fully-fledged and well equipped Information Library with about 30012 Books that can be borrowed and used by staff for free.

• The book section’s collection comprises of books of different subjects not only limited to broadcasting also include academics.

• That Thelma Hlapolosa, Abel Thulare and Themba Mtshali are responsible for the newspaper cutting section in the library. This section has a huge collection of newspaper clippings like Mandela collection, TRC, biographies and etc.

• The magazine section is managed by Nomawethu Mgangxela and consists of more than 35 titles. We have weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual magazines and more than 39081 indexed articles on our system which is good for research. Biographies, finances, personalities, politics and many more form part of the indexed articles.

• That SABC information library has subscriptions to the online databases that you can search information for work and personal use. You can search African Electronic Journals (SA ePublications), access to SA ePublications, and Law collection via the Sabinet Reference platform.  www.sabinet.co.za

SABC Information Library, in cooperation with LIASA (Library Information Association of South Africa), is celebrating South African Library Week from 17-21 March.

This year South Africa is celebrating 20 years of Democracy. The SABC Information Library see it fit to also celebrate libraries in 20 years of democracy, as well as celebrate South African Authors in 20 years on their library shelves.

The THEME this year is “Check in @ your library”.
The SABC Information Library has 20 book tittles and their authors from 1994 - 2014 selected to celebrate during the week.

Librarians' Choice 

In terms of LIASA the Library Week this year will start from 15-22 March 2014, but here at the SABC Information Library it will officially be launched on 17 March.

"The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) is celebrating South African Library Week from 15-22 March 2014 with the theme: Celebrating Libraries in 20 years of Democracy:check in @ your library”

South African Library Week will be launched by the Deputy Minister of Arts & Culture, Dr Joseph Phaahla at the National Library of South Africa, Cape Town, on Saturday, 15 March 2014.

Librarians across the country will be hosting special programmes during this week to highlight the services and resources available in their facilities. Members of the public are encouraged to visit their libraries during this period and participate in these activities. A selection of these programmes from around the country will be available on the LIASA website, http://www.liasa.org.za.

In 2014 South Africa celebrates 20 years of democracy and the theme Celebrating Libraries in 20 years of Democracy: check in @your library serves as an opportunity to focus attention on:
- Celebrating the development and role of libraries in the 20 years of South African democracy
- Highlighting how libraries are making the right to freedom of access to information, as enshrined in the Bill of Rights, a reality
- Enhancing nation building and community development by opening the doors of learning to all
- Showcasing libraries as desired spaces for:

• connecting people to each other, learning resources, communities, government, the world and the environment
• advancing literacy through the intellectual and aesthetic development of all ages
• providing access to global knowledge and information in different formats to advance research and create new knowledge
• fostering a spirit of enquiry and desire for lifelong learning
• challenging one’s own beliefs and inculcating a respect for diverse beliefs, opinions and views all
• contributing towards the development of an informed nation, and South Africa becoming an information society

Since 1994 great strides have been made to build new public and school libraries, merge academic libraries and upgrade historically disparate library facilities throughout the country. The burgeoning of the library and information services (LIS) sector in South Africa has resulted in a wide network of libraries that currently aims to serve all South Africans.
The current status quo of libraries include:

• The National Library of South Africa (Pretoria and Cape Town)
• The South African Library for the Blind
• 5 Legal Deposit Libraries
• Library of Parliament
• 23 Higher Education libraries
• 1993 public libraries (1612 provincial/381 metro)
• Approx 3000 school libraries
• Corporate libraries; law libraries and special libraries which include Research Council
• Libraries; Government libraries; Prison libraries; etc

This tangible national web of libraries gives predominantly free access to information and
knowledge from all types of libraries around the country and has created the opportunity for a
dynamic networked and connected society.

Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and YouTube are widely used by libraries
globally for marketing, communication and outreach. South African libraries are no different! The
theme provides us with an opportunity to reach out to those who are unaware of how libraries have
embraced technology to enhance access and learning. So, to the “Born Frees,” born in 1994 and
voting for the first time in the 2014 national elections, and all those who belong to Generation C
(connected digital natives & techno-savvy), it is definitely cool to check in @ your library!

Furthermore, the “Librarians' Choice: Top 20 South African Books, 1994-2014” will be launched
during this Week. In celebrating this theme, library workers across South Africa have been
requested to identify the Top 20 South African books published during these 20 years that:

• were written by a South African author in one of our official languages
• were published for the first time between 1994 and 2014
• reflect South African life by South Africans
• focus on issues of democracy or contribute to the consolidation of our democracy
• examine who we are and where we are heading as a nation.

The nominations are open to all genres, all types of literature from fiction to non-fiction, adult and
even children’s books. The Librarian’s Choice should be available to all when they “check in” at their
libraries!"

“EDUCATE YOURSELF @ YOUR LIBRARY”

The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) is celebrating South African Library Week during 16-23 March 2013 with the theme: “Educate Yourself @ Your Library”.
The launch of SA Library Week will take place at the National Library of South Africa, 228 Johannes Ramokhoase (Proes) Street, Pretoria, on Saturday, 16 March, where the Deputy Minister of Arts & Culture, Dr Joseph Phaahla will deliver the keynote address.

The theme for 2013 is “Educate Yourself @ Your Library” as libraries have always played a pivotal role in education and self-development, be it a school, academic, public or special library. Currently the public library is largely fulfilling a school library role to fill the gap left by the lack of school libraries. Apart from the “formal” role that libraries play in this arena, they have also always played an informal role in the education of communities as “the University of the People”. 

The concept of lifelong learning is embodied in all libraries especially public and community libraries. The fact that any person, young or old, rich or poor, employed or unemployed, can walk into a library and find information (in both electronic and traditional formats) to educate and enrich themselves, for free, is one of the major pluses in the favour of libraries.

The theme provides us with an opportunity to bring to the attention of the country, community leaders and decision-makers the role that libraries play in educating communities and the nation at large.

Librarians across the country will be hosting special programmes during this week to highlight the services and resources available in their facilities.
