SABC Radio Archives keeps the heritage of SABC Radio broadcast material

In celebration of Heritage Month, and Heritage Day tomorrow, the SABC Radio Archives share a snippet from the heritage that they are keeping in the archives.

One of the gems is an extract from SAFM PM Live on 24 September 1997, part of a news bulletin with actuality of former President Nelson Mandela who opened the Robben Island Heritage Museum, one of South Africa’s heritage sites.

It is still on a reel-to-reel tape, one of the very dependable formats in the Radio Archives.

"National Heritage Day is an opportunity to share stories about our heritage. It is a day for families to visit heritage sites, and  for children to learn about the struggle heroes who fought against apartheid. We dare not allow the sacrifices of those who gave all, so that we may be free, to be forgotten. 

This initiative is in line with the theme for this year's Heritage Month; "Celebrating 20 years of democracy: Tell your story  that moves South Africa Forward". This year's Heritage Month also takes place against the backdrop of our 20 Years of Freedom celebrations which reinforces our collective memory of the struggle  towards promoting a national identity.

The SABC Media Libraries asked to be involved with their special charity at Woodside Sanctuary, a residential home for children with profound intellectual disabilities. Woodside accommodated the SABC Media Libraries by asking them to help over lunch-time. The personnel had to help with cake decorating, and helping to feed the children. It was again an eye-opening experience, and the children loved the extra attention and hugs.

Winter Appeal 2014
Dear Friends

Woodside is facing an uphill battle to meet our operational costs in an incredibly difficult fundraising climate.
We currently provide full-time residential care to 100 residents with profound intellectual disability. Thirty of our residents have no means of support and the Sanctuary has to carry the entire cost of their accommodation.

Our operating budget for the year is R11 958 187.00. In order to meet our budgeted deficit of R642 408.00 the Fundraising Department will need to raise an amount of R3 532 385.00. Failure to do this will result in a bigger loss for the period.

Without the incredible support from our friends such as you; we could simply not do what we do. Our ability to continue to help depends upon your continued kindness.

Our wards are big and they get really cold in Winter, so we graciously ask that if you are in a position to support, that you please consider making a contribution towards the purchase of warm blankets, tracksuits, children's and adults’ jerseys, pyjamas, dressing gowns, socks and slippers.

This winter please help us keep our residents warm!

Justice Leshilo interview on Channel Africa - about creating awareness about Nelson Mandela #MandelaDay

Sheila Bell interviewing Information Librarian Justice Leshilo on One on One on Channel Africa.
The focus is on Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, in creating awareness for Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July 2014.

Justice Leshilo talks about his life and career as Information Librarian, as well as the impact the life of Nelson Mandela has had on his life.

His research about Mandela the Man in the Information Library is part a yearly initiative for Mandela month, culminating in Mandela Day. The SABC Information Library has many books, magazine articles and newspaper articles about Nelson Mandela. It is part of the preparation being ready for news and actuality journalists and producers compiling programmes about Nelson Mandela.

Mandela Day at the SABC - a few suggestions to make every day a Mandela Day

The SABC is endorsing and running a few initiatives for Mandela Day.

This year the focus has been exceptionally high with Nelson Mandela celebrating 95 years, and being in hospital now for the past five weeks with a lung infection.

SABC's radio stations and television stations have their own initiatives doing their 67 minutes for Madiba this year.

5FM with Gareth Cliff celebrated Mandela Day in "Holding Hands" with Madiba for 67 seconds with a performance by the Soweto Gospel Choir.


 Children from Nkosi's Haven were there to support the initiative.

SABC personnel were treated to music, speeches by SABC's Kaizer Kganyago and Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Sello Hatang made it clear that it was not only about Mandela Day today, but about making each day a Mandela Day, building on the example of Nelson Mandela.


The SABC website lists some of the initiatives being endorsed:

- The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory - a donation can be made here;

- The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital - a R20 sms donation can be made to 40301, with the message "SABC"

- The Nelson Mandela Children's Fund - a donation can be made here, or have a look at the wishlist;

- 46664 - list of partners to see where you can become involved;

- Mandela Day - with 67 ideas of how to give 67 minutes of your time;

- Apartheid Museum - "For anyone wanting to understand and experience what apartheid South Africa was really like, a visit to the Apartheid Museum is fundamental."

- Messages for Madiba - Submit messages via text or via a phone-in service. The SABC radio stations and televisions will be making use of the messages, and we will be hearing it on the air. The messages will be compiled and kept by the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.
The messages that will be used in radio broadcasting will be archived in the SABC Radio Archives.

Nelson Mandela's voice - priceless treasures from the SABC Radio Archives

Nelson Mandela's rich legacy in sound is being preserved in the SABC Radio Archives.

We are reminded of him each day, with posters and framed photos, and his voice from our sound archives.

In 1999 the SABC Radio Archives launched a CD with some of his famous speeches.
The CD is titled: "The voice of Nelson Mandela Extract from famous speeches - original recordings"

One of the speeches was recently used in an Afrikaans drama for Radio Sonder Grense, titled Die Offer (in Radioteater). The speech was from his recital of Ingrid Jonker's poem in 1994, "The Child".

The SABC Radio Archives personnel met him at the launch in 1999. It was a huge honour to shake his hand.

Archivist Elizabeth Mate wore her Mandela t-shirt today, during a time that all is thinking and sending wishes to him for a recovery from a sick bed.


We wish him well this month turning 95!
