SABC to celebrate South African Library Week by focusing on the services of the SABC Information Library

Internal Mailer promoting South African Library Week 2015 at the SABC

South African Library Week (SALW) will also be celebrated at the SABC this year, with a specific Library Day planned on Monday 16th March.

The following is copied from an article on the SABC Intranet by Keketso Magwai of Corporate Communications about the importance of the day, as well as the services that are rendered by the SABC Information Library.

"The SABC joins the rest of the country in celebrating one of the most fundamental information hubs, the library. The celebration of the South African Library Week (SALW) this year begins from the 14th to the 21st of March 2015. The week is meant to create awareness and appreciation for the role that the library plays in connecting, informing and educating the society. SALW was initiated by the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) in 1997 as a campaign with the first library week taking place in 2002.
[...]
The SABC Library Manager, Ms. Monica Van Deventer states that “First Citizens must be aware that the library has a vast collection of books, magazines, newspaper clippings, magazines and online resources. First Citizens are always welcome to visit the library, not only for academic purposes, but also for work related purposes and personal development. We urge all First Citizens to make use of the Information Library”. She further highlights that the employees can also access the catalogue from the Intranet, in order to get to the catalogue, click on more links on the Intranet and scroll down where the library link will be found and First Citizens will be able to search for resources from their work stations."
The Library Week campaign already kicked off this week with an internal "Did you Know?" mailers going out on the corporate communications informing personnel about the upcoming South African Library Week as well as focusing on the SABC Information Library.

The plans for SALW Day at the SABC includes a musical welcome on Monday to personnel arriving at work. Harp player, Ventura, as well as Suzette Lombard (Music Library Manager) will be playing music from 7:00 am to 8:30 am. The SABC Media Libraries personnel will also hand out leaflets to the personnel at the entrances, and directing them to the Information Library personnel in the foyer as well as in the Library. The plan is to acquaint personnel with navigating the Intranet to the SABC Information Library's information products that are made available to them. There are also three surprise parcels (including books, music CDs, stationary and note pads) to be won by personnel.

Interview with a student at the SABC Polokwane Media Library

SABC Polokwane has acquired the service of student Surprise Phadu, busy with a Bachelor of Information Science (BINF).
The student will be here for five weeks to acquire valuable skills, but also to help with the workflows at SABC Polokwane Media Library.

Questions are asked to understand the type of skills that she has to offer, but also to get a better understanding of what she is doing at SABC Polokwane.

Please tell us about your personal history as well as your studies. How did you become a student working here at SABC?

My name is Surprise Phadu, a registered student of the University of South Africa. I am a final year student in the field of Information Science. I came to SABC to observe the working environment within the media library and to know what is happening within the profession.

What does your job as student entails here at SABC?

My position was to observe the processes with regards preservation and acquisition of the SABC material. I rotated through all the sections within the Media Library; from Archives, Acquisition, the Book Library to the Circulation desk. I have also made use of various systems and have increased my knowledge in the field of technology.  Now I know the responsibilities of the information librarians and archivists within the profession and  I am hoping to come back for an internship in the future to get hands-on training within the field.

What have you learned already while you have been there?

I have learned what is required from an Archivist and an Information Librarian, and how to work with different library users; the internal and the external clients. I had gained priceless experience within the Media Library and the knowledge I acquired I will not get  anywhere else. It has encouraged me to build on it in the future.

Tell us of any interesting anecdotes with regards to working at SABC Media Library in Polokwane?

The interesting part of working within the Media Library comes with the use of various systems and the technical part of it.

What are you planning to do after this?

I am planning to visit the SABC in Auckland Park to broaden the knowledge I have at present and I am hoping they won’t deny me an opportunity. I told myself that this is the beginning of a long journey to the profession in Information Management.

South African Library Week 16-23 March 2013 - "EDUCATE YOURSELF @ YOUR LIBRARY" #SALW2013

Press Release:

SOUTH AFRICAN LIBRARY WEEK – 16-23 MARCH 2013

“EDUCATE YOURSELF @ YOUR LIBRARY”

The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) is celebrating South African Library Week during 16-23 March 2013 with the theme: “Educate Yourself @ Your Library”.
The launch of SA Library Week will take place at the National Library of South Africa, 228 Johannes Ramokhoase (Proes) Street, Pretoria, on Saturday, 16 March, where the Deputy Minister of Arts & Culture, Dr Joseph Phaahla will deliver the keynote address.

The theme for 2013 is “Educate Yourself @ Your Library” as libraries have always played a pivotal role in education and self-development, be it a school, academic, public or special library. Currently the public library is largely fulfilling a school library role to fill the gap left by the lack of school libraries. Apart from the “formal” role that libraries play in this arena, they have also always played an informal role in the education of communities as “the University of the People”.

The concept of lifelong learning is embodied in all libraries especially public and community libraries. The fact that any person, young or old, rich or poor, employed or unemployed, can walk into a library and find information (in both electronic and traditional formats) to educate and enrich themselves, for free, is one of the major pluses in the favour of libraries.

The theme provides us with an opportunity to bring to the attention of the country, community leaders and decision-makers the role that libraries play in educating communities and the nation at large.

Librarians across the country will be hosting special programmes during this week to highlight the services and resources available in their facilities. Members of the public are encouraged to visit their libraries during this period and participate in these activities. A selection of these programmes from around the country will be available on the LIASA website, http://www.liasa.org.za.

World Book & Copyright Day 2012 #WorldBookDay

LIASA poster: World Book Day 2012

Read Embrace Tomorrow

Today is World Book Day! It is a day of reflection and reading of books.

UNESCO describes the theme as a specific focus on books and translation this year:

"23 April is a symbolic date for world literature for on this date in 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo.
It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference, held in Paris in 1995, to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. In this respect, UNESCO created both the World Book and Copyright Day and the UNESCO Prize for Children's and Young People's Literature in the Service of Tolerance.
The year 2012 also marks the 80th anniversary of the Index Translationum. This international bibliography of translation provides a unique tool for the monitoring of translation flows in the world. UNESCO will celebrate this anniversary by organizing a debate on this instrument."
                                                            - UNESCO World Book Day

Read more about the background of World Book Day.

The message from the Director-General of UNESCO can be found here, and there are resources available on the UNESCO website.
The events of World Book Day 2012 that have been planned around the world are listed as well.

The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) has made a poster available (see above), but unfortunately it seems that there are no specific events planned for today that's listed!

How should we celebrate this day?
Should we still reflect on the importance of books?
What about e-books and the proliferation of reading in the digital sphere?

National Library Week #SALW2012 - report

Monica van Deventer, the Principal Librarian of the SABC Information Library, reports about their initiatives for this year at South African Library Week.

"The SABC Information Library is a member of LIASA and participates in the annual library events.

National Library Week is one of these events and the Information Library supports this initiative every year.

This year’s theme was Develop @ your library

The library had a small exhibition in the Radio Park foyer of some of the books, magazines and newspapers that can be found in the library.

Our main concern this year was to show our clients our powerful online products, which can be accessed from the desks of SABC staff.

The main purpose of Library Week is to promote the library of the SABC to the staff of the SABC.

To show the staff what resources the library have and also to make them realise how important these resources is for the content of both Radio and TV programmes."

South African Library Week 2012 #SALW2012

SALW2012
17 - 24 March is South African Library Week.

The SABC Information Library is participating as well.
More posts are to follow about the programme and activities next week.

The theme of the week is: Develop @ your library
"...the idea is to link libraries to Government imperatives and thus build links with Government Departments and Government Ministers.  With the major focus of government on job creation, the theme was chosen with this in mind.  While libraries cannot create jobs, they do however contribute to this initiative by developing the nation through, for example, development of programmes that focus on skills development, providing access to information that allows the user to develop and empower him/herself and granting access to computers and online tools, enabling users to develop their computer skills as well as providing tools that allow them to draw up a CV or search for job opportunities.
The theme is fairly broad this year and can thus be adopted by the entire sector.  This theme will allow libraries in the various sectors to adapt it to the services they provide in developing their "communities" or client base." -  LIASA

Interview with an intern at the SABC Information Library: Agrineth Mashile

Agrineth Mashile
Intern: SABC Information Library
The SABC Information Library has acquired the services of two interns since March of this year.
The interns are here for a couple of months to acquire valuable skills, but also to help with the workflows in the SABC Information Library.

Agrineth Mashile is a qualified Librarian.

Questions addressed to the intern to understand the type of skills that they have to offer, but also get a better understanding of what they are doing now here in the SABC Information Library.

Agrineth, please tell us about your personal history as well as your studies. How did you become an intern here at the SABC?

My name is Agrineth Mashile. I was born and grew up in a small village in Limpopo province and started school at Moomane primary and continued to Ngale secondary till 2006. I went to the University of Limpopo (Turfloop campus) from 2007 till 2010 to study Information Studies and Communication studies. It was a four years degree.  Last year when I was busy with my research I got the internship advertisement from my lecturer and I applied immediately. I got a call from Thembi asking me to come to the interview. In January I got another call telling me that I went through and qualified for the internship.

What does your job entail here at the SABC?

Here at the Media Library (Information Library) we are two interns which means we have to rotate. I started by scanning SABC radio bulletins and special collections. I have to index them as well. After a month I started scanning daily newspapers. Now I work with books: circulation, accessioning, cataloguing and classification, shelving and assisting clients with the Internet and relocation of books. Next month I will be working with magazines.

What have you learned already while you have been here?

I’ve gained a lot of experience more especially with indexing. Surely I can take a post that needs an indexer. I have also acquired knowledge on how to handle people with different attitudes and expectations, while maintaining my professionalism.

What suggestions do you have for us with regards the collection of the Information Library?

I think the students from Sound Engineering should have some kind of library orientation because they are leaving the library in disarray everyday; misplacing and hiding of books.
There must be some kind of security alarm installed when somebody goes out of the library with stolen books.

What are you planning to do after this?

I enjoyed working here! It will be a privilege if maybe I can have a permanent job here, apart from the wish to work for big institutions like the National library of South Africa. I want to further my studies and do systems management or knowledge management.

Interview with an intern at the SABC Information Library: Veronica Machate

Veronica Machate
Intern: SABC Information Library
The SABC Information Library has acquired the services of two interns since March of this year.
The interns are here in the SABC Media Libraries for a couple of months to acquire valuable skills, but also to help with the workflows in the SABC Information Library.

Veronica Machate is a qualified Librarian.

Questions are asked to understand the type of skills that they have to offer, but also to get a better understanding of what they are doing here in the SABC Information Library.

Please tell us about your personal history as well as your studies. How did you become an intern here at SABC?

I was born and raised in Bushbuckridge in a place called Acornhoek. I started school in 1994 and matriculated 2006. I went to the university of Limpopo Turfloop campus in 2007 where I studied for a bachelor degree in information studies which I obtained in 2010 and I will be graduating on the 14th of this month. During my final year of my study I worked as a part-time student assistant in our university library and also worked as a computer laboratory assistant. I heard about this internship from our lecturer. I applied and fortunately I was called for an interview. In January I was called and told that I was appointed.

What does your job entail here at SABC?

My job differs according to the sections in the Information Library. They have a newspaper, magazine and book section. After every three months I have to rotate. During my first three months I have worked in the newspaper cutting section where my job entailed the scanning of daily newspapers, using a flatbed scanner, indexing SABC articles and also responding to requests. From May until July I will be working in the magazine section and in this section my job entails indexing and cataloguing magazines articles. Thereafter I will be rotating to the book section.

What have you learned already while you have been there?

I have mastered responding to requests, scanning of daily newspapers and more especially indexing of SABC and magazine articles.

Tell us of any interesting anecdotes story with regards to your internship

During my first month I was always hanging my access card on my neck even on the street where I live so that people could see that I’m working at the SABC.

What are you planning to do after this?

My plan is to get a job as librarian either in the SABC or any other sector and to further my studies in the field of Information Studies.
