Mandela Day - a celebration of an icon's life by giving back

Woodside Sanctuary donation from SABC Media Libraries

Even though every day should be a Mandela Day, it is great to have a specific day on the calender which makes us plan to help and contribute to our fellow human beings.

When asked to vote, the overwhelming majority feels that Mandela Day should be a public holiday:

The SABC had a busy day yesterday with many outreach activities. The SABC website hosts a page specifically dedicated to Mandela.

The SABC Media Libraries supported Woodside Sanctuary for Mandela Day. They contributed a collected donation of much-needed toiletries as well as a monetary donation. The thought is that although Woodside Sanctuary is struggling with an overload of issues to stay afloat, it is better to give something than nothing at all!

Woodside Sanctuary takes care of the profoundly intellectual disabled in Cottlesloe, just around the corner from the SABC in Auckland Park in Johannesburg!

SABC Media Libraries in support of Woodside Sanctuaries for Mandela Day

Mandela Day is coming up again on 18 July this year.
The SABC will  mark Mandela Month and the Nelson Mandela International Day with a number of planned events with the hashtag #bemoreMadiba



SABC Media Libraries are once again collecting necessities for Woodside Sanctuary.
Their needs are even more pressing than before. Woodside Sanctuary looks after the profoundly intellectual disabled.

This is a list of items that would be of great assistance to Woodside:

Nappies 
•    Adult – Sizes: S, M, L, XL
•    Children: size 6 and up

Toiletries - Any and all toiletries are always of great assistance to Woodside especially:
•    Aqueous cream
•    Soaps (like dettol or protex)
•    Shampoos
•    Roll on deodorant
•    Toilet paper
•    Tissues
•    Vaseline

Another option would be items for their nursing staff such as:
•    Disposable Gloves
•    Plastic Aprons

Woodside Sanctuary are also experiencing a crisis with regards their Laundry. They have three large industrial washing machines of which one has been in disrepair for many years, so the ladies in the laundry have been using only two machines to wash up to 1500 nappies a day as well as all the dirty clothing from all 5 of our wards. The third machine has packed up as well which has left them with a crisis. As a registered Non-Profit organisation, Woodside simply does not have the funds readily available to replace this R167 000.00 piece of essential equipment.

Feedback from LIASA Marketing Seminar 12-13 May 2016 Durban

The Library and Information Association of South Africa LIASA and The National Library of South Africa requested representatives from the SABC to present at the Library Marketing Seminar in Durban.
Justice Leshilo (Information Librarian) and Jacqueline Wilson (Music Librarian) represented SABC Media Libraries

Both librarians appreciated the fact that the seminar included SABC Information Library as partner with LIASA and NLSA. They even adjusted their programme to help the SABC librarians add up all the topics to include in their presentation.

The topic of their presentation: Partnerships between Media & Libraries: Buying the media space for promotion and marketing of libraries.

Justice Leshilo introduced his  presentation with a lengthy background to the  SABC Information Library whileJacqueline Wilson spoke about the SABC Music Library and what we do on a day-to-day basis.

Justice Leshilo explained the logo based on the SABC's visual identity standards. The meaning of the logo and the importance of branding were also explained. He spoke about the regulations on the usage of logos.

Casual Day in the SABC Media Libraries in support of Woodside Sanctuary #CasualDay

The SABC Media Libraries supported the Woodside Sanctuary on Friday 4 September with the Casual Day campaign. They bought the Casual Day stickers through the Sanctuary for mentally and physically disabled "children". As a beneficiary organisation they receive R4 on each R10 sticker sold.

SABC to celebrate South African Library Week by focusing on the services of the SABC Information Library

South African Library Week (SALW) will also be celebrated at the SABC this year, with a specific Library Day planned on Monday 16th March.

The following is copied from an article on the SABC Intranet by Keketso Magwai of Corporate Communications about the importance of the day, as well as the services that are rendered by the SABC Information Library.

"The SABC joins the rest of the country in celebrating one of the most fundamental information hubs, the library. The celebration of the South African Library Week (SALW) this year begins from the 14th to the 21st of March 2015. The week is meant to create awareness and appreciation for the role that the library plays in connecting, informing and educating the society. SALW was initiated by the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) in 1997 as a campaign with the first library week taking place in 2002.

The SABC Library Manager, Ms. Monica Van Deventer states that “First Citizens must be aware that the library has a vast collection of books, magazines, newspaper clippings, magazines and online resources. First Citizens are always welcome to visit the library, not only for academic purposes, but also for work related purposes and personal development. We urge all First Citizens to make use of the Information Library”. She further highlights that the employees can also access the catalogue from the Intranet, in order to get to the catalogue, click on more links on the Intranet and scroll down where the library link will be found and First Citizens will be able to search for resources from their work stations."

The Library Week campaign already kicked off this week with an internal "Did you Know?" mailers going out on the corporate communications informing personnel about the upcoming South African Library Week as well as focusing on the SABC Information Library.

The plans for SALW Day at the SABC includes a musical welcome on Monday to personnel arriving at work. Harp player, Ventura, as well as Suzette Lombard (Music Library Manager) will be playing music from 7:00 am to 8:30 am. The SABC Media Libraries personnel will also hand out leaflets to the personnel at the entrances, and directing them to the Information Library personnel in the foyer as well as in the Library. The plan is to acquaint personnel with navigating the Intranet to the SABC Information Library's information products that are made available to them. There are also three surprise parcels (including books, music CDs, stationary and note pads) to be won by personnel.

South African Library Week 2015 will be celebrated again this year from 14 - 21 March. 

The SABC Media Libraries are planning to advocate the services of the SABC Information Library for that week. They are planning a special day on 16 March to showcase the services that the Information Library provides to the personnel of the SABC.

The SABC Media Libraries responded to their  Christmas appeal for 2014  by digging into their own pockets for a small donation. The thought was: Better late than never!

The SABC Media Libraries appeal to anyone to also consider Woodside Sanctuary when wanting to spread a little bit of the Christmas spirit!

Season’s Greetings, Friends!
We’ve all heard that it is better to give than to receive. To know that you are helping to make someone’s life just a little bit easier or helping to make someone happy is an indescribable feeling.

So as we close out 2014 we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all our supporters who kindly contributed their time and support to the running of our specialised facility.

So while you are busy buying and making gifts for your loved ones this Festive Season, please remember there are so many people in need. While most of us take for granted having a merry Christmas, some among us can only pray and dream about it.

Christmas is a special time for our residents and we would like to appeal to you again to help us end the year on a high note by ensuring that those in our care have a very happy Festive Season. We would like to arrange that each child receives a small gift on Christmas day and that we have a special Christmas Lunch that they can all enjoy.

End-of-year festivities at the SABC Media Libraries

The SABC Media Libraries celebrated the end of 2014 with a braai!

One of the best ways we as South Africans love to celebrate!

Not only do the SABC Media Libraries help in preserving the rich heritage of South African Broadcasting in audio and print, but we also celebrated Heritage Day in true South African style!


 We had a Heritage "Braai" (barbecue) sponsored by our manager, Bennie Jacobs and his managers. Thank you! It was on Tuesday, because Wednesday, the official Heritage Day on 24 September, was on a Public Holiday here in South Africa!

The Braai Master, Themba Mtshali, made sure that the meat was grilled to perfection!

The Principal Librarian of the SABC Media Library in Cape Town, Marlene Ungerer, was this week in Auckland Park at the SABC Radio Archives.

SABC Cape Town is planning to appoint a Radio Archivist for the first time, and the archivist will be expected to report to the Principal Librarian in Cape Town. SABC Cape Town Media Libraries provides services to the following radio stations: Good Hope FM, RSG, SAFM and Umhlobo Wenene. A need was identified for training for Marlene to be able to understand the role and complexities of the post.

Cate Jele, the Acting Manager and Team Leader of the request team, trained her on the in-house cataloguing system, Natural Document Management (NDM), as well as all the processes, systems and procedures of working in the Radio Archives.

Marlene expressed her delight in being able to learn so much in one week, as well as walking away with a new understanding about the work of the radio archivists.

The SABC Radio Archives shared a short video clip on Instagram of one of their oldest recordings in the Archives: The voice of Florence Nightingale from 1890 recalling the Battle of Balaclava. The original recording was done on a wax cylinder, and this specific recording is a copy that was done in 1984 on a reel-to-reel tape.
It was part of a series of recording from the SWABC, from a programme by Percy Sieff, This Week in Time.

LIASA EXCO and branch members visiting specialist libraries, including the SABC Media Libraries

The SABC Media Libraries had the pleasure yesterday in welcoming a delegation from the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA), including the following EXCO members: Ms Ujala Satgoor - LIASA President; Ms Segametsi Molawa - LIASA President Elect; Mr Mandla Ntombela - LIASA National PRO; Ms Therese Els - LIASA NAtional Secretary and Ms Annamarie Goosen - LIASA Manager.

The LIASA delegation's road-show included visiting different types of libraries, and they wanted  to include a specialist library like that of the SABC! Their aim is to form an idea of the state of libraries and information services in South Africa. They would also like to share information with their staff members on burning issues.

The LIASA delegation was shown the the SABC Radio Archives, the SABC Record Library and the SABC Information Library. Because of time constraints the delegation was not shown the SABC Music Library or the Audio Restoration Section.

The delegation expressed a sincere interest in how the SABC Media Libraries give access access to their content, which includes audio (radio programmes and clips), as well as commercial music and information contained in books, magazines, newspaper and electronic.

It means a great deal to the SABC Media Libraries to be able to form connections with Information Professionals from across South Africa. As members of LIASA they appreciate the interest that was shown in their services. The specialised nature of the SABC Media Libraries' services contribute to a perceived isolation from their peers in the librarian and archivist fields.

The significance of the visit has highlighted the worth of the services once again, and gives an appreciation of the specialist services that are rendered at the SABC Media Libraries!

The SABC Media Libraries asked to be involved with their special charity at Woodside Sanctuary, a residential home for children with profound intellectual disabilities. Woodside accommodated the SABC Media Libraries by asking them to help over lunch-time. The personnel had to help with cake decorating, and helping to feed the children. It was again an eye-opening experience, and the children loved the extra attention and hugs.

Winter Appeal 2014
Dear Friends

Woodside is facing an uphill battle to meet our operational costs in an incredibly difficult fundraising climate.
We currently provide full-time residential care to 100 residents with profound intellectual disability. Thirty of our residents have no means of support and the Sanctuary has to carry the entire cost of their accommodation.

Our operating budget for the year is R11 958 187.00. In order to meet our budgeted deficit of R642 408.00 the Fundraising Department will need to raise an amount of R3 532 385.00. Failure to do this will result in a bigger loss for the period.

Without the incredible support from our friends such as you; we could simply not do what we do. Our ability to continue to help depends upon your continued kindness.

Our wards are big and they get really cold in Winter, so we graciously ask that if you are in a position to support, that you please consider making a contribution towards the purchase of warm blankets, tracksuits, children's and adults’ jerseys, pyjamas, dressing gowns, socks and slippers.

This winter please help us keep our residents warm!

Mandela Day 2014 in the SABC Media Libraries

This is a special time of the year for the SABC Media Libraries when Mandela month and Mandela Day on 18 July come around.

The SABC Media Libraries have large collections of books, newspaper and magazine articles (SABC Information Library), as well as audio material on Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (SABC Radio Archives). The Libraries and Archives are getting a great number of requests for information on the Great Man, as well as requests for audio to be used in broadcasts for Mandela Day by the SABC radio and television producers and journalists.

The SABC has a number of projects planned to celebrate Madiba month, while the SABC Media Libraries will also do their 67 minutes (#Do67Minutes) at Woodside Sanctuary again this year.

Justice Leshilo, Reference Librarian in the SABC Information Library, did an interview on Channel Africa last week about creating awareness about Nelson Mandela.

Justice Leshilo interview on Channel Africa - about creating awareness about Nelson Mandela #MandelaDay

The focus is on Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, in creating awareness for Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July 2014.

Justice Leshilo talks about his life and career as Information Librarian, as well as the impact the life of Nelson Mandela has had on his life.

His research about Mandela the Man in the Information Library is part a yearly initiative for Mandela month, culminating in Mandela Day. The SABC Information Library has many books, magazine articles and newspaper articles about Nelson Mandela. It is part of the preparation being ready for news and actuality journalists and producers compiling programmes about Nelson Mandela.
