The SABC Media Libraries responded to their  Christmas appeal for 2014  by digging into their own pockets for a small donation. The thought was: Better late than never!

The SABC Media Libraries appeal to anyone to also consider Woodside Sanctuary when wanting to spread a little bit of the Christmas spirit!

Season’s Greetings, Friends!
We’ve all heard that it is better to give than to receive. To know that you are helping to make someone’s life just a little bit easier or helping to make someone happy is an indescribable feeling.

So as we close out 2014 we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all our supporters who kindly contributed their time and support to the running of our specialised facility.

So while you are busy buying and making gifts for your loved ones this Festive Season, please remember there are so many people in need. While most of us take for granted having a merry Christmas, some among us can only pray and dream about it.

Christmas is a special time for our residents and we would like to appeal to you again to help us end the year on a high note by ensuring that those in our care have a very happy Festive Season. We would like to arrange that each child receives a small gift on Christmas day and that we have a special Christmas Lunch that they can all enjoy.

LIASA Conference Theme: "Celebrating libraries in 20 years of democracy: continuing the dialogue"

This year’s conference theme was to call to action national building and social cohesion of life to the common South African story. Everyone plays a part in the shared South African experience.

The LIASA Representative Council & Executive Committee together with the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) signed the Lyon Declaration with the United Nations which is guided by Human Rights. This declaration focuses mainly on poverty alleviation, HIV/Aids and focus on youth regarding access to education. Women and girls have the right of access to information in order to eradicate poverty. Information professionals manage data to provide accurate information to all sectors of government and society.Also cultural heritage preservation, more especially in the public sector. The focus should be on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to become pivotal in bridging the gap of technology, especially in rural communities. The declaration was signed by NLSA & LIASA and handed over to the United Nations.

The 16th annual Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) Annual Conference was held at the Birchwood Conference venue in Boksburg.

SESSION1: OPENING SESSION

LIASA president, Ujala Satgoor welcomed everybody to the 16th LIASA conference, saying that we are still celebrating libraries and continuing the dialogue of social cohesion.

She introduced Prof Rocky Ralebipi Simela, CEO of the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) as the National Librarian. Prof Rocky said the traditional library is shifting but it doesn't mean it is the end of librarianship, but that we have to move with the times. The issues of conditional grant and further education and training for librarians need to be reviewed . In terms of technology and digital library the NLSA spends R3bn for ICT annually.

Later we were introduced to the Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi who is a former librarian of the then University of the North  (now University of Limpopo) who praised the efforts made by LIASA and the National Library of South Africa in 20 years of democracy by eradicating illiteracy and development of communities.

Introduction

16th LIASA Annual Conference

The annual LIASA Conference was held at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng on the 22-26  September 2014 .
The theme of the conference was ”Celebrating Libraries  in 20 years of democracy: continuing the dialogue”.

The conference in its 16th year was celebrated for the achievements and the trials still faced by the profession, however the achievements served as an indication that what LIASA is trying to achieve is of vital importance to the library profession in South Africa and Africa as a whole.

The key address by the outgoing president of LIASA Ujala Sagtoor touched on how LIASA was created as a platform to allow librarians to engage in relevant, articulate their opinions, raise concerns and affirm their roles through networking in order to collaborate, initiate innovative dynamic libraries and services which can contribute towards the development of an informed nation.
She also encouraged all delegates to select the papers and sessions carefully during the conference in order to have a varied learning and insightful experience.

The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is held again on 27 October.

The theme for this year's celebration of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2014 is "Archives at Risk - Much More to Do!"

 Our AV heritage allows us not only to appreciate watching and listening to our AV collections but more importantly, it tells us about who we are.

It was hosted in the heart of multicultural literacy and publication -- the National Library of South Africa's Center for the Book -- the venue for the conference.

A Heritage Braai at the SABC Media Libraries

Not only do the SABC Media Libraries help in preserving the rich heritage of South African Broadcasting in audio and print, but we also celebrated Heritage Day in true South African style!


 We had a Heritage "Braai" (barbecue) sponsored by our manager, Bennie Jacobs and his managers. Thank you! It was on Tuesday, because Wednesday, the official Heritage Day on 24 September, was on a Public Holiday here in South Africa!

The Braai Master, Themba Mtshali, made sure that the meat was grilled to perfection!

SABC Radio Archives keeps the heritage of SABC Radio broadcast material

In celebration of Heritage Month, and Heritage Day tomorrow, the SABC Radio Archives share a snippet from the heritage that they are keeping in the archives.

One of the gems is an extract from SAFM PM Live on 24 September 1997, part of a news bulletin with actuality of former President Nelson Mandela who opened the Robben Island Heritage Museum, one of South Africa’s heritage sites.

It is still on a reel-to-reel tape, one of the very dependable formats in the Radio Archives.

A quote for Heritage Day:

"National Heritage Day is an opportunity to share stories about our heritage. It is a day for families to visit heritage sites, and  for children to learn about the struggle heroes who fought against apartheid. We dare not allow the sacrifices of those who gave all, so that we may be free, to be forgotten. 

This initiative is in line with the theme for this year's Heritage Month; "Celebrating 20 years of democracy: Tell your story  that moves South Africa Forward". This year's Heritage Month also takes place against the backdrop of our 20 Years of Freedom celebrations which reinforces our collective memory of the struggle  towards promoting a national identity. 

Celebrating our heritage is an integral part of healing the divisions of the past and to establish a society based on democratic values, social justice and fundamental human rights."               - SABC

The Principal Librarian of the SABC Media Library in Cape Town, Marlene Ungerer, was this week in Auckland Park at the SABC Radio Archives.

SABC Cape Town is planning to appoint a Radio Archivist for the first time, and the archivist will be expected to report to the Principal Librarian in Cape Town. SABC Cape Town Media Libraries provides services to the following radio stations: Good Hope FM, RSG, SAFM and Umhlobo Wenene. A need was identified for training for Marlene to be able to understand the role and complexities of the post.

Cate Jele, the Acting Manager and Team Leader of the request team, trained her on the in-house cataloguing system, Natural Document Management (NDM), as well as all the processes, systems and procedures of working in the Radio Archives.

Marlene expressed her delight in being able to learn so much in one week, as well as walking away with a new understanding about the work of the radio archivists.

The voice of Steve Biko from the SABC Radio Archives

The news archivist, Nare Mashiane, reminds us today, 12 September, about the death of Steve Biko.

Steve Biko, anti-apartheid activist, died on 12 September 1977. He was the founder of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa.

The photo is from the SABC and the sound of an interview is from the SABC Radio Archives. In commemoration of the man.

Scratched acetate 1943 record sound saved in the SABC Radio Archives

A 1943 acetate record with a large scratch was fixed by the SABC Radio Archives' sound engineer, Obakeng Phiri.

It is a 1943 song about "Generaal De la Rey" (composed by C Lamprecht) and sing by Betsy de la Porte. On the 15th of September it is the 100 year anniversary since the South African Boer War general died, and the material is needed from the archives for a tribute programme.

This is the original sound.

As archivists we do not always have the specialised skills of the sound engineers, and we sometimes struggle to fix the formats when they are damaged. It became very apparent when the sound engineer was called in and he could do his digital magic.

Thanks to specialised skills!

The archivist could now update the catalogue, and save the fixed version electronically for future use as well!

Steve Kekana launches his new album at the SABC Record Library

Renowned music legend, composer and artist Steve Kekana blessed the SABC Record Library with his presence at the launch of his 44th album called “Risen” on Friday 22 August.

Risen is a re-recording of some of his biggest hits. This album includes  memorable songs like “Slow Drive to Soweto”, “Sanibonani”, “The Bushman” and other songs that will put you in a dancing mode.

With the man of the moment speaking, the one thing taken from his speech is that he has always loved music and wants his music to be part of South Africa’s past, present and future. He loved being at the SABC Record Library and in his own words he said: “The Record Library is the epicentre of a music earthquake”.

Present at the launch were members from Next Music Record Company and the publishers who deal with the distribution and marketing of the album, as well as music compilers from different radio stations and other music guests from inside and outside the SABC.

The room was filled with warmth and so much laughter, and the Record Library is humbled to have had such an amazing person in their presence.

The SABC Radio Archives shared a short video clip on Instagram of one of their oldest recordings in the Archives: The voice of Florence Nightingale from 1890 recalling the Battle of Balaclava. The original recording was done on a wax cylinder, and this specific recording is a copy that was done in 1984 on a reel-to-reel tape.
It was part of a series of recording from the SWABC, from a programme by Percy Sieff, This Week in Time.

LIASA EXCO and branch members visiting specialist libraries, including the SABC Media Libraries

The SABC Media Libraries had the pleasure yesterday in welcoming a delegation from the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA), including the following EXCO members: Ms Ujala Satgoor - LIASA President; Ms Segametsi Molawa - LIASA President Elect; Mr Mandla Ntombela - LIASA National PRO; Ms Therese Els - LIASA NAtional Secretary and Ms Annamarie Goosen - LIASA Manager.

The LIASA delegation's road-show included visiting different types of libraries, and they wanted  to include a specialist library like that of the SABC! Their aim is to form an idea of the state of libraries and information services in South Africa. They would also like to share information with their staff members on burning issues.

The LIASA delegation was shown the the SABC Radio Archives, the SABC Record Library and the SABC Information Library. Because of time constraints the delegation was not shown the SABC Music Library or the Audio Restoration Section.

The delegation expressed a sincere interest in how the SABC Media Libraries give access access to their content, which includes audio (radio programmes and clips), as well as commercial music and information contained in books, magazines, newspaper and electronic.

It means a great deal to the SABC Media Libraries to be able to form connections with Information Professionals from across South Africa. As members of LIASA they appreciate the interest that was shown in their services. The specialised nature of the SABC Media Libraries' services contribute to a perceived isolation from their peers in the librarian and archivist fields.

The significance of the visit has highlighted the worth of the services once again, and gives an appreciation of the specialist services that are rendered at the SABC Media Libraries!

The International Librarians Network: new round begins September 2014

Want to build your professional network and learn about librarianship around the world? 
Love the idea of professional travel but just don’t have the budget? The International Librarians Network (ILN) is for you. 

The ILN peer mentoring program is a facilitated program aimed at helping librarians develop international networks. The next round of this popular program will commence in September 2014.

Applications for the next round of partnerships will open in July 2014 and close at midnight on Wednesday 20th of August 2014. Numbers are limited, so apply early to ensure your inclusion.

The ILN is open to anyone working in the library and information industry around the world. The program remains free and the only requirements to participate are an internet connection, fluent English skills, an hour each week and a desire to build professional connections and learn from colleagues.

The SABC Media Libraries asked to be involved with their special charity at Woodside Sanctuary, a residential home for children with profound intellectual disabilities. Woodside accommodated the SABC Media Libraries by asking them to help over lunch-time. The personnel had to help with cake decorating, and helping to feed the children. It was again an eye-opening experience, and the children loved the extra attention and hugs.

Winter Appeal 2014
Dear Friends

Woodside is facing an uphill battle to meet our operational costs in an incredibly difficult fundraising climate.
We currently provide full-time residential care to 100 residents with profound intellectual disability. Thirty of our residents have no means of support and the Sanctuary has to carry the entire cost of their accommodation.

Our operating budget for the year is R11 958 187.00. In order to meet our budgeted deficit of R642 408.00 the Fundraising Department will need to raise an amount of R3 532 385.00. Failure to do this will result in a bigger loss for the period.

Without the incredible support from our friends such as you; we could simply not do what we do. Our ability to continue to help depends upon your continued kindness.

Our wards are big and they get really cold in Winter, so we graciously ask that if you are in a position to support, that you please consider making a contribution towards the purchase of warm blankets, tracksuits, children's and adults’ jerseys, pyjamas, dressing gowns, socks and slippers.

This winter please help us keep our residents warm!

Mandela Day 2014 in the SABC Media Libraries

Follow SABC's board Nelson Mandela Day in the SABC Media Libraries on Pinterest.

This is a special time of the year for the SABC Media Libraries when Mandela month and Mandela Day on 18 July come around.

The SABC Media Libraries have large collections of books, newspaper and magazine articles (SABC Information Library), as well as audio material on Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (SABC Radio Archives). The Libraries and Archives are getting a great number of requests for information on the Great Man, as well as requests for audio to be used in broadcasts for Mandela Day by the SABC radio and television producers and journalists.

The SABC has a number of projects planned to celebrate Madiba month, while the SABC Media Libraries will also do their 67 minutes (#Do67Minutes) at Woodside Sanctuary again this year.

The focus is on Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, in creating awareness for Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July 2014.

Justice Leshilo talks about his life and career as Information Librarian, as well as the impact the life of Nelson Mandela has had on his life.

His research about Mandela the Man in the Information Library is part a yearly initiative for Mandela month, culminating in Mandela Day. The SABC Information Library has many books, magazine articles and newspaper articles about Nelson Mandela. It is part of the preparation being ready for news and actuality journalists and producers compiling programmes about Nelson Mandela.

In Good Memory of Bryan Reilly

Bryan Reilly was a technical producer at Radio 2000 before he passed away on 6 June 2014.

Moshe Maghundu, from SABC RBF in the Northern Cape, has fond memories of Bryan Reilly.
"We will always remember him. May his soul rest in peace."

"It was very good knowing Bryan Reilly and working with him. I have good memories of him when we did an outside broadcast at Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley. He was always a gentleman in his working relationship with all of the people in the team."

The outside broadcast went smoothly with the Radio 2000 team on that day. The Radio 2000 crew kept to the exact broadcast schedule, which made the work very easy. The Kimberley RBF technical producers were Me Rena Maghundu and Mr William Heath.

The Radio 2000 crew consisted of Mmaphuti Mpheroane, Justice Ramohlola,
Dineo Motaung and Bryan Reilly. 

Moshe Maghundu reflects on the professionalism of the team, but also that they made time to have some fun in-between the broadcasting.

The former Northern Cape acting Premier, Me Grizelda Boniwe Cjiekella was also present, and the learners of the school were very excited that such an event was staged at their school.

The school’s principal highlighted the challenges and successes of Hoërskool Diamantveld school, which are made possible by dedicated people. He thanked everybody for contributing towards the success of the school.

It was a successful day for the SABC teams, which left the cheerful learners in good spirits.

"The death of Bryan Reilly will remain a shock to us all and we will remember his friendship and the good person he was! 

May his soul rest in peace!"
